Lymph: The secret to longevity

Lymph: The way to longevity starts with cleansing and detoxification

What is lymph?

Lymph is a yellowish watery fluid found everywhere in the body. It circulates through tissues while picking up toxins, bacteria and other waste products and filtering them in the lymph nodes. Apart from cleansing toxins, the lymphatic system also houses while blood cells, some red blood cells, proteins and fats. Thus, it plays a key role in supporting our overall health, wellness and longevity.

Why is lymph circulation important for longevity?

Since lymph carries waste products away from the cells and clears the waste in the lymph nodes, if lymphatic drainage stagnates, the waste cannot be cleaned properly. Imagine your bath tub not draining between each bath you take. Overtime it will get dirtier and dirtier, the waste will start building up, and bacteria and other pathogens will start to grow increasing the danger of contracting infectious diseases. Similarly, poor lymphatic circulation can lead to a lot of health problems – physical as well as mental and emotional. Some of them are listed below.

Some symptoms of poor lymph circulation:

  • Accumulation of fluid in the lungs and around the heart
  • Arthritic pain
  • Inflammation
  • Low immune system response
  • Allergies
  • Recurring infections
  • Frequent colds
  • Sinus problems
  • Swollen spleen and/or lymph nodes
  • Bloating and period pain
  • Cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Tumors
  • Swelling anywhere in the body (face, joints, legs, tummy, etc.)
  • Toxicity
  • Headaches
  • Tinnitus
  • Inability to focus
  • Emotional overwhelm
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Weight gain

What you can do to increase lymph circulation:

  • Eat warm foods.
  • Make sure you are well hydrated.
  • Avoid cold drinks at all cost.
  • Avoid fizzy drinks.
  • Avoid breads and cheeses.
  • Sip hot water and lemon throughout the day.
  • Eat beetroots, cherries and berries (i.e. fruit and veggies that dye your hands and clothes red or blue).
  • Alkalize your diet by eating more greens.
  • Use scrubbing gloves in the shower and brush towards the heart.
  • Move as much as you can. Yoga, walking and swimming are great.
  • Use a rebounder. But make sure you jump from side to side, not up and down.
  • Get some kind of lymphatic drainage massage or try the excellent BodyTalk lymphatic drainage technique I am about to explain below.

The Veltheim method of lymph drainage

Most techniques for stimulating the lymphatic system are highly effective in cases where lymph has already made it into the vessels and is stuck there. Lymphatic vessels don’t have a pump and lymph can therefore get stuck easily. The lymphatic vessels rely on muscle contraction and on the pumping action of the blood vessels to move the lymph. When stagnation occurs due to lack of physical movement and/or poor blood circulation, massage can be helpful in moving lymph along the lymphatic system.

However, often lymph can’t make it into the lymphatic vessels in the first place. There is a lot of fluid that leaks out of the capillaries and accumulates between the cells. We call this interstitial fluid. Accumulation of interstitial fluid can cause swelling, bloating, pain, heaviness, weight gain, fatigue, toxic build-up, etc. Often we can’t see obvious signs of accumulation of interstitial fluid for a long time. And if it remains untreated, we usually see cysts, tumours and other more serious problems showing up later on.

The Veltheim Method of lymphatic drainage is designed to move accumulated interstitial fluid into the lymphatic vessels. Once in the lymphatic vessels, this fluid can get filtered, the toxins and pathogens are removed, the excess fluid is released while the filtered fluid returns to the circulatory system to support blood volume. As a result, you can feel much lighter, more energized, clearer in your head, and healthier on the whole.

The added benefit of the Veltheim Method of lymphatic drainage is that as it helps move the interstitial fluid, it also breaks down stuck emotions in our bodies. As a result, after this procedure you are guaranteed to feel happier.

In June 2014 I did some training in applied anatomy and physiology and the Veltheim Method of lymphatic drainage was part of that training. I personally have had a lot more energy and mental clarity since I had this technique done on me a couple of times. At the moment, I am offering the Veltheim Method of lymphatic drainage as part of my BodyTalk practice. You can request a session for lymphatic drainage only, and we will go systematically over the whole body to help move accumulated interstitial fluid and stuck emotions.
